What is medication-assisted treatment?
Medication-assisted treatment combines FDA-approved medication, counseling and behavioral therapy, and structured recovery support. It helps reduce cravings, ease withdrawal symptoms, and lower the risk of overdose. When your body feels more stable, it becomes easier to focus on therapy, build coping skills, and work toward long-term recovery.
If you are early in recovery, MAT can also support you through medically supervised withdrawal management before you transition fully into therapy and skill-building.
The medications we use
- Suboxone — buprenorphine with naloxone
- Subutex — buprenorphine alone
- Brixadi — extended-release buprenorphine. It is not naltrexone
- Vivitrol — extended-release naltrexone
Which is appropriate is a clinical decision made with your prescriber. The distinction that matters most: naltrexone requires full opioid abstinence before it can be started, and buprenorphine does not.
Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone)
Suboxone reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing the same effect as opioids. A physician, nurse practitioner, or other authorized medical provider typically selects it for people who need daily craving management while they engage in therapy, and monitors your response with regular check-ins and dose adjustments as needed.
Subutex (buprenorphine alone)
Subutex contains buprenorphine without naloxone. It may be recommended for people who cannot tolerate naloxone or whose medical history calls for a different formulation. As with Suboxone, an authorized medical provider oversees dosing and adjusts it based on your response.
Brixadi (extended-release buprenorphine)
Brixadi is a long-acting injectable form of buprenorphine — not naltrexone — dosed weekly or monthly rather than daily. It may suit people who want fewer daily medication routines while they are in residential treatment. An authorized medical provider determines eligibility and manages the injection schedule.
Vivitrol (extended-release naltrexone)
Vivitrol is a once-monthly injection that blocks the effects of opioids and can reduce alcohol cravings. Because it is naltrexone-based, it requires seven to 10 days fully opioid-free before the first injection. A nurse and/or authorized medical provider determines when it may start and administers each dose.
How MAT fits into treatment here
Medication is one part of the program. People taking it are in residential treatment with the rest of it around them — individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, trauma-informed therapy, relapse prevention, and aftercare planning before discharge. Medication alone is not a complete treatment plan; it works alongside counseling to help you build coping skills while your body and brain begin to heal.
Length of stay is determined by medical necessity.
Intake and medication evaluation
Admission begins with a confidential intake and a full medical history review. If medication is appropriate, a physician, nurse practitioner, or other authorized medical provider completes a medication evaluation and determines when it may begin — timing is a medical decision, not a fixed schedule.
From there, care continues with regular provider visits for medication management, individual and group therapy, and relapse prevention planning, coordinated with any medical detox or residential care you need.
Residential only
We do not offer outpatient MAT, monthly maintenance visits, or a standalone MAT clinic. If ongoing outpatient medication management is what you need, admissions will say so and point you elsewhere rather than admit you to a level of care that does not fit.
Mental health medication
Prescribing for a mental health condition is handled by an outside prescriber we coordinate with. Painted Grove Recovery does not provide psychiatric services on site.

No. Buprenorphine is a partial agonist taken at a steady prescribed dose to stabilise someone so therapy is possible; naltrexone is not an opioid at all. Neither reproduces the effect of the substance it replaces.
